In 1973, Bharati was a bank employee, married with three children—until he gave it all up to devote his life to Shiva, a Hindu deity. To fully commit, he made a radical decision: he would raise his hand and never lower it.
For the first two years, he endured intense pain but refused to give up. Over time, the feeling in his arm disappeared, and his muscles atrophied into a stiff, claw-like shape, frozen at a 45-degree angle. Over 52 years later, his arm remains raised—a symbol of surrender, devotion and peace. Bharati believes this way of life brings him closer to Shiva and inspires others to live more peacefully. “I just want all Indians and the whole world to live in peace with each other,” he said. |
