Lawn Chair Larry always dreamed of being a pilot, but poor eyesight made that impossible—so he did the next best thing. He filled 42 weather balloons with helium and tied them to his lawn chair. With only a sandwich, a six-pack of beer, and a pellet gun, he cut the line and soared into the air, far higher than planned, reaching nearly 5,000 meters.
He shot a few balloons to descend, but accidentally dropped the gun. He eventually came down, but not before drifting into airport traffic and landing in power lines, which caused a 20-minute blackout.
Larry was fined $4,500 for unauthorized aircraft operation, but he successfully argued that a lawn chair isn’t an aircraft, and the fine was dismissed. |
