To promote independence among their children, the Dutch have a tradition called “dropping” where kids, typically preteens, are left in the middle of the woods at night and must find their way back to camp by themselves. It is meant to be challenging, and they often stagger in at two or three in the morning.
Parents might follow but won’t guide, might leave mysterious notes, and sometimes hide, growling in the woods. “You just drop your kids into the world,” says a Dutch parent. “Of course, you make sure they don’t die, but other than that, they have to find their own way.” If this sounds crazy to you, it is because you are not Dutch. |
