Three million smart toothbrushes were hacked in order to carry out a massive cyber attack against the Swiss bank, Vontobel.

The internet-connected toothbrushes were linked together in something known as a botnet and then used to perform a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack. This type of attack overloads websites with huge amounts of web traffic, disrupting service.

The bank’s website was knocked offline for several hours which led to millions of dollars in damages and lost business, even though no funds were stolen.

Stefan Zuger, an expert in global cybersecurity, warned, “Every device that is connected to the Internet is a potential target.” He advised to “keep your software updated, even on your toothbrushes.”
