In 1996, a routine dive changed Cristina Zenato’s life forever. A shark approached her, not to attack, but seeking help. She noticed a fishing hook lodged in its mouth. Taking a leap of faith, Zenato removed the hook.
After that first encounter, other sharks with hooks in their mouths started approaching Zenato. She removed the hooks from all of them and made it her mission to help as many sharks as possible. Over the next 20 years, Zenato removed nearly 300 fishing hooks from sharks. Each successful removal strengthens her bond with these creatures. Most of the sharks flock to her when she gets underwater – some even cuddle up to her. Zenato’s unique ability to calm these predators with her touch has earned her the nickname “Shark Whisperer.” |
