Healthy Sun
Vocabulary

consistently = always the same

mortality = death

sun exposure = time in the sun

A surprising new study suggests that more time in the sun could help people live longer. Researchers followed nearly 30,000 Swedish women for 20 years and found that those who spent more time outdoors had lower rates of heart disease and fewer non-cancer deaths compared to women who avoided the sun. Women who consistently stayed out of the sun had roughly double the mortality rate compared with those who had the highest sun exposure. Although sun-seeking women had a slightly higher risk of skin cancer, the overall health benefits appeared to outweigh the risks.

Lead author Dr. Pelle Lindqvist concluded that sun avoidance may be a major health risk, comparing its impact on mortality to that of smoking.

The study suggests it may be time to rethink strict sun-avoidance.
