In 2005, a Canadian man named Kyle MacDonald was able to trade a red paper clip for a house. He took a children’s game called “Bigger, Better”, where you trade something small for something slightly better, and turned it into a real-life social experiment. His first trade was the paper clip for a pen, and with each subsequent trade, the items got slightly more valuable—ranging from a doorknob to a snowmobile, then a movie role, and finally a two-story house in Saskatchewan, Canada. He was able to achieve all this in just 14 trades over the span of 12 months.

Kyle’s story became famous and showed how creative thinking, persistence, and the power of the internet can turn something as small as a paper clip into something life-changing.
