David Mwangi, a 28-year-old marathon runner from Nairobi, Kenya had always wanted to be a Paralympian. There was only one problem – he wasn’t disabled. That is until he made the extraordinary decision to have his healthy leg amputated.
Mwangi suffers from ‘body integrity dysphoria’ (BID), a rare condition where you feel that a limb or healthy body part shouldn’t be part of your body.
After many years of struggling with this psychological burden, he finally found a doctor who agreed to perform the amputation.
Post-surgery, Mwangi immediately began training with a prosthetic leg, and has demonstrated remarkable progress.
“I want to be a role model to others,” Mwangi said. “You can do anything if you set your mind to it, and I plan on becoming the first person with BID to win gold in Paris.” |
