Honor Bound
In 1914, British Captain Robert C. Campbell was captured by German forces. Two years later, word reached him that his mother was dying in England. Desperate, he wrote directly to Kaiser Wilhelm II, begging to see his mother one last time.

Against all odds, the Kaiser agreed—but only if he swore on his honor to return.

In December 1916, Campbell traveled home, spent precious days at his mother’s bedside, and was with her when she died. True to his promise, he then returned to captivity in Germany.

The following year, no longer bound by that promise, he tried to escape, but was recaptured near the border and remained a prisoner until the end of the war.
