In 2015, two Canadian professors set out to test human kindness by creating a talking robot named hitchBOT. The child-sized robot couldn’t walk, but it could speak, take photos every 20 minutes, and share its location using GPS. Equipped with solar panels and a quirky personality, hitchBOT was placed on a street in Canada to see how far it could travel relying only on strangers.

Within just weeks, hitchBOT had successfully traveled across all of Canada. It even made its way into the cockpit of a plane and continued its journey through Germany and the Netherlands.

Encouraged by its success, the creators sent hitchBOT to the U.S.  It attended a Red Sox game in Boston and visited Times Square in New York, but the journey came to an abrupt end in Philadelphia, where the robot was beaten to death.
