A team of MIT engineers who work on AI have noticed that after long periods of learning, AI starts acting like its dreaming.

These digital daydreams, as they are now being called, are fascinating windows into the inner workings of machine consciousness.

Researchers speculate that dreams could help AI systems consolidate and organize information gained during their active period — similar to how humans process experiences during sleep. Yet, this discovery has ignited intense ethical discussions.

People are worried about AI developing emotions, having nightmares, or being distracted from their tasks.  There’s also the question of whether or not machines should even be allowed to dream.
